Maya Bazaar (1936)

Synopsis: Young Sasirekha, daughter of Balarama, finds a loving play-mate in Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna and Subhadra. Subhadra suggests to Balarama that Sasirekha and Abhimanyu would make a lovely couple, if married. Balarama falls in with the idea and promises to give his daughter in marriage to Abhimanyu only.
After some years, having lost their kingdom in the game of dice with Kauravas, Pandavas are forced to go to Dwaitavanam. Sri Krishna comes to Pandavas and pacifies them with his soothing words and persuades Arjuna to send Subhadra and Abhimanyu with him to Dwaraka. During the course of conservation with Balarama, Revathi expresses disapproval of the proposal to marry Sasirekha to Abhimanyu, on the ground that the latter's father was bereft of kingdom and wealth.
In Hasthinapura, Sakuni suggests to Duryodhana to win the Yadava clan to his side by a marriage alliance between Duryodhana's son Lakshmana Kumara and Sasirekha. Duryodhana approves the suggestion and immediately sends Sakuni to Dwaraka to negotiate with Balarama. Sakuni goes to Dwarakae and receives warm welcome by Balarama. Sakuni slyly moots Revathi the topic about Sasirekha's marriage to Lakshmana Kumara. Revathi much pleased at the idea and decides to give her daughter Lakshmana. Then both of them persuade Balarama to give his consent to the proposed alliance. Having heard about this new proposal through her maids, Subhadra rushes to Balarama to remind him of the previous promise made to her to marry Sasi to Abhimanyu. Balarama denies his previous promise. Srikrishna assures Sasirekha that her wish is fulfilled.
Abhimanyu decides to leave the place with his mother and go to the Pandavas in Dwaitavanam. In the course of the journey in the forest, Abhimanyu fights with Ghatothkacha, the demon chief and the son of Bheema through Hidimbi. Vyasa appears and introduces them to each other as brothers. Ghatothkacha salutes Subhadra and takes them to his cave. Having come to know what was befallen them Ghatothkacha becomes very indignant and promises them to bring Sasirekha right to their very presence.
As planned by Sri Krishna, Ghatothkacha and Karala go to Dwaraka disguised as Bhanumathi's servant maids and make Revathi believe that they are emissaries sent by Bhanumathi to bring Sasirekha and take the latter along with them and reach their cave.
As per Ghatothkacha's instructions Karala creates a Maya Bazaar and teases both Yadavas and Kauravas. Ghatothkacha himself assumes the form of Sasirekha and goes to Revathi. When the actual marriage ceremony is going on with Maya Sasirekha (Ghatothkacha) and Lakshmana Kumara, Ghatothkacha assumes the real form and scares all those that are present and thus spoils the whole function. Seeing that his son's marriage has ended in a fiasco Duryodhana feels very much ashamed and humiliated and Sakuni tries his best to console him.
Sri Krishna consoles his brother Balarama by soothing words of philosophy and advises him to perform the marriage of his daughter, Sasirekha with Abhimanyu, now at Ghatoghkacha's cave. Balarama now realises the truth and they all go to Ghatothkacha's cave where the marriage of Abhimanyu and Sasirekha is celebrated to the great satisfaction of all.
